Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Kausar is a food stylist, chef, cookbook author and cooking instructor with over 25 years of experience in culinary arts, education, and advertising.

Kausar’s love for cooking started at family meals and eventually evolved into a career. Growing up in a big Pakistani family it was easy for Kausar to be enamored with food from a young age. “Warm smells would float out of the kitchen and cause a sensory explosion,” she says about her mother’s fresh home-cooked meals where ingredients like turmeric, cumin, and ginger were frequently used, along with whatever else happened to be in season. As she started helping her mother in the kitchen, cooking became a therapeutic activity – bringing people together over a meal gave her immense pleasure as it brought her community closer together.

The class started on time and she was able to take us through all three recipes timely. The zoom app worked well since I am used to working with it for work however my app would not connect the audio despite both Kauser and I trying to unmute my connection. The food however we made was most delicious. It was an experience learning to make all three dishes and I had a brunch that I would not have been able to order locally. I am glad that I shared the info for the class with a friend and she invited another friend so it was just the three of us from Hawaii, all taking a Pakistani cooking class with an instructor in Washington State. Take that for making it work in our day of social distancing!

Kausar was lovely, and the recipes were absolutely delicious. It would have been helpful to have the recipe, rather than just the ingredient list, ahead of time, and/or some indication of which ingredients we could prep and store in the same bowl together. I was not sure what we would be doing with things, so I ended up with a bunch of separate tiny bowls when I could have had far fewer, and less cleanup. I also was not sure whether we were expected to prep all the ingredients ahead of time, or just have them on hand. It quickly became clear that we had to have prepped everything ahead of time, and Kausar would be moving pretty fast. On the whole, it was an awesome experience and I learned to make something I had never tried before, from a highly skilled chef.

Fun, easy, and delicious! I liked that nearly all ingredients were easy to obtain. I didn’t have cardamom seeds, so just made plain milk tea and it still came out great!

Easy recipe, nice to cook virtually with people from all over. Would have appreciated a little bit more structure/instructions with ingredients and steps to the recipe, etc. I prepped all the ingredients beforehand so I was able to follow along but if someone didn't it would be difficult to keep up. Overall a good experience. Would make the potato cutlets again.
