Empanadas are pastries traditionally filled with seafood, meat, cheese, vegetables or fruit. They're thought to have originated in Spain, where the Empanada Festival is part of Galician culture. The name comes from the Spanish word "empanadas," which means to coat with bread.
Join us in our first plant-based virtual cooking class! Chef Nelma, a Vegan Nutrition Student and owner of her own plant-based catering company in Houston, will take you through the process of making your own vegan empanadas from scratch! However, all eaters are welcome to join this class! Chef Nelma has provided recipe substitutions to appeal to the carnivores in your household too. She will talk you through the process of preparing your meat if you'd prefer using a protein other than soy or mushrooms to fill your savory pastries.
Not only is this class going to teach you how to make a traditional Latin and South American dish, but you will be able to do so with a healthier and equally appetizing twist, by baking instead of frying your empanadas.
Chef Nelma will take you through the process of making your dough and rolling it out into 8 disks for filling your empanadas. There will be leftover dough to make more for your larger family, or freeze to make more at a later date.
Invite your friends and family to join you for class, so you can connect virtually and enjoy a fun experience cooking together. No experience is required! You'll have the opportunity to interact with Chef Nelma throughout the class.
You will receive an email with the equipment and ingredients list. However, the main ingredients required include: flour, salt, vegetable oil, apple cider vinegar, Just Eggs or eggs, your choice of milk, mushrooms, red onion, cilantro, garlic, steak seasoning, veggie stock, red wine, salt & pepper to taste, tomatoes, lime, and avocado.
Prepare your mis-en-place ahead of the session (see instructions in the ingredients/equipment sheet), grab a glass of your favorite drink, and let’s get cooking!
