Handmade Gnocchi

Description

In this hands-on class, you will learn how easy and fun it is to prepare handmade gnocchi from scratch. We will begin with a brief discussion about the origins of gnocchi in Italy, including some variations across the country and internationally. Rumor has it the word itself derives from the term for ‘knuckle,’ referring to the pasta’s distinctive shape and texture.

With a few simple ingredients, a little muscle and a lot of love, whip up home-made pillow-soft dumplings just like Nonna! Pair with a delicious Brown Butter & Sage sauce and a glass of vino and you have a deliciously hearty meal to serve up for any occasion!

In this fun and interactive class, you will learn the tips and tricks of how to make a classic potato dough from scratch. Practice rolling out your gnocchi into logs and perfect its classic shape using a tool as simple as a fork. Enjoy your gnocchi with a Brown Butter & Sage sauce that Chef Christian will also teach you how to make from scratch.

No experience is required! We provide all the equipment and ingredients, which are easy to find at local markets if you don’t already have them in your home kitchen. Our events are casual and meant to be fun and instructive, not hardcore. This class is designed to be just as fun for the cooking enthusiast who wants to be a part of every step as it is for the first-timer who’s happier observing and assisting (or taste testing).

Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in. The nature of our classes are set up so that booking parties will work together during class, sharing both ingredients and equipment.

Drinks are NOT included in the ticket price. There will be drinks available for purchase at the venue. Outside drinks are not allowed. 21+ please.

Meet your chef instructor
A Maryland native, Chef Christian was raised on his family’s love of New York City fare – think crusty loaves, freshly made sausages, and Italian ice. Don’t even get him started on his classmates who thought ‘the Subway’ was a sandwich shop. He began his culinary career working for an Ethiopian food truck in Washington, D.C., then moved to appetizers and salads at the organic fine dining institution Restaurant Nora, and finally ran the pastry department for a bakery in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition to cooking, he enjoys performing and teaching as a professional juggler.

Chef Christian was fantastic. Very friendly, pleasant, and personable. His instructions were clear, and he was patient with the students. We came away with a good understanding of how to make gnocchi, as well as the brown butter sage sauce. Two things that could use improvement. The big one is the facility. The power draw of the induction burners was too much for the hotel conference room’s circuits! So chef had to constantly try to keep the burners going while instructing the class on making gnocchi. He is a juggler, and this required a lot of juggling! In the end the water never really got to boiling, and with it getting late Chef helped us pack our gnocchi to take home to cook. So a better facility is paramount in improving the experience. Second, taking nothing away from the job Chef did, it would be helpful if he gave an overview of what to expect. We did not know that we would be making a brown butter sauce, or even that we would be eating the gnocchi at the end of class! So more descriptive information from Cocusocial, and an introduction from Chef laying out the program for the evening would be a plus.
