Steamed Bao Buns

Description

Learn the art of making soft, pillowy Bao Buns completely from scratch! Easily steamed, they are even more fun to fill with your ingredients of choice.

Choose between vegetarian or traditional pork bao, and join Chef Jason in his Manhattan kitchen as he teaches you the secret to making your own Bao Buns from scratch, at home. Follow the process of making the dough and allowing it to prove while you make your filling of choice. You'll also learn to make a dipping sauce from scratch, flavoring it to your preference with either peanut butter, sriracha, or maple syrup.

This class is kid friendly, so invite the whole family along to join in. Connect virtually and enjoy a fun time creating something from scratch, together. No experience is required! You'll have the opportunity to interact with Chef Jason throughout the class.

You will receive an email with the equipment and ingredients list. However, the main ingredients required to participate along with the chef in your own kitchen include: all purpose flour, yeast, water, oil, sugar, salt, vegetables of choice, ground pork, water chestnuts, garlic, onion, five spice powder, soy sauce, honey, lemon or lime juice, and your choice of peanut butter, sriracha, or maple syrup.

Measure out your ingredients ahead of the session, grab a glass of your favorite drink, and let’s get cooking!

Tickets are on a per-person basis. Please note our class times are in Eastern Time Zone!

This was such a fun and worthwhile class! Jason was amazing; so attentive to everyone. Two things that would help: 1. The instructions sent out after registering say "Make sure you prepare the ingredients according to the attached recipe so you can follow along with our Chef Instructor in real time." This is a little confusing, even for people who have a fair amount of experience cooking. Does "prepare the ingredients" mean doing the measuring, cutting, etc.-- or just having all ingredients and tools readily available? I figured the latter, and I was right. But it might better be said "Make sure you have all ingredients and tools at hand so you are ready to follow along with our Chef." 2. It would be really nice if the recipe given to us was exactly the same as those that the instructor walked us through. Timing was different (such as Jason's "when you see steam arise from steamer, then steam for 10 minutes, turn off heat and let set for 2 minutes. Do not open top!") Very different from printed instructions: "Steam buns for 15 minutes." Likewise some of the ingredients that chef Jason recommended such as tahini butter and hoisin sauce were not on our list of ingredients; obviously I can try these things next time but it would be nice to have those available for class. In addition: I would have liked to hear more about who chef Jason is-- where does he work now, what is his background? Where was he trained? It would have enhanced the experience. Likewise, it would've been nice to have a brief classmate intro: where are you from and what inspired you to take this class? As it turned out, many of these things came out, but still, it's always nice to know who you are having fun with. All in all, we had a GREAT time and would recommend this class to anyone. The bao buns class with Chef Jason was fantastic. He made sure everyone had completed each step before moving on to the next. Several variations were given to customize the flavor of the filling. In addition, chef gave some general cooking advice that could be applied to other recipes. It was a great and delicious experience!

Chef Jason was great! He explained each step of the recipe clearly, making to give details on why you cut items certain ways or why you complete a process in certain steps. I really enjoyed the class and hope to take another in the future.
