Led by Chef Instructor Annria, a culinary expert from South Africa, this class is designed for food lovers who are ready to experience something new and different from their usual repertoire. South African cuisine is best known for its eclectic fusion of cultural influences such as Dutch, Portuguese, African, and South Asian. In this hands-on, interactive class, you will be learning to create one of South Africa's classic national dishes known as "Bobotie." It is similar to Italian Lasagna or American Casserole dish with an interesting twist of South Asian influence.
You are in for a real treat! We will be making Bobotie, made with spiced minced meat and creamy topping, basmati rice, and fresh banana sambal made with yogurt to round out the meal. While milder than the typical Thai or Indian dishes, our menu today will include vibrant ingredients such as turmeric, cinnamon, golden raisins, and ginger, hinting to South Asia (primarily Indonesia and India)'s influence on the cuisine and culture of South Africa.
No experience is required! We provide all the equipment and ingredients, which are easy to find at local markets if you don’t already have them in your home kitchen. Find out about our favorite resources in San Francisco for sourcing ingredients and basic equipment for making this menu at home. Our events are casual and meant to be fun and instructive, not hardcore. This class is designed to be just as fun for the cooking enthusiast who wants to be a part of every step as it is for the first-timer who’s happier observing and assisting.
Please arrive on time, wearing your mask. Guests are invited to bring their own wine, beer, or champagne. This class will be hosted at Chef Annria's home.
