BBQ Pork Buns

Description

Learn the art of making fluffy, soft, pillowy buns that steal the show on any Chinese food restaurant or takeaway menu.

Follow along with Chef Jen to make the traditional BBQ pork filling, or substitute with your favorite vegan or vegetarian filling. We recommend bean paste, custard, cream cheese, or fruit preserves. Follow the process of making the dough completely from scratch! Stand mixers are highly recommended, but hand mixers can also work!

While the dough is resting we will make our filling and BBQ sauce. Learn how to marinate pork like a pro. Then cut, roll, and fill the bread before egg washing your buns and putting them in the oven to bake.

Invite your friends and family to join you for class, so you can connect virtually and enjoy a fun experience cooking together. No experience is required! You'll have the opportunity to interact with Chef Jen throughout the class.

You will receive an email with the equipment and ingredients list. However, the main ingredients required include: all purpose or bread flour, sugar, brown sugar, instant dry yeast, olive oil, salt, pork tenderloin or boneless ribs, ground pepper, light soy sauce, Chinese Shaoxing wine, garlic cloves, tomato paste, honey, Worcestershire sauce, Apple Cider Vinegar, garlic powder, cornstarch, and an egg yolk.

Prepare your mis-en-place ahead of the session (see instructions in the ingredients/equipment sheet), grab a glass of your favorite drink, and let’s get cooking!

Tickets are on a per-person basis. Please note our class times are in Eastern Time Zone!

I love cooking classes with Chef Jen! When I first started cooking classes I was afraid of trying to keep up with the Chef. As I did a couple of classes with Chef Jen, I realized she is very conscientious about the progress of her participants. She checks in often and, also, lets us know when to begin or wait til she gets to a certain step for us to begin. She tells us the reasons for waiting to that point and why it is best. Ie., she began her dough and asked us to wait til her dough was ready to proof. One of the reasons was about having us watch so we could learn the techniques for the ingredients which affect the overall outcome of our product. At first I thought waiting would make us behind her time wise, but following her advice was very advantageous. After watching her, and listening to tidbits of her advice, we actually were right on time! Chef Jen has a great reign over the usage of time throughout the class! She utilizes every minute! When the dough is proofing, we did the marinading for the filling; while the filling was marinading, we prepared the sauce! By the time we combined the filling with the sauce, the dough was proofed; and, Voilá! It was time to combine all and bake!!! Chef Jen consistently checks in with each of her participants on progress and for Q&A’s. She explains available substitutes for ingredients and which ones might not be so good. Ie., you can use apple juice instead of cooking wine if you wish to avoid alcohol. And apple juice would give a fruitier kick as well! I never would have thought of that myself because I don’t need to avoid alcohol, but the thought of a fruitier kick is very appealing for me! Chef Jen has many more great qualities! But, for now, I can just say I am Never disappointed in her classes!!! Last but not least, the end result looks just like pictures! I now feel confident I can cook-a-long with Chef Jen!!!
