Asian Steamed Bao Buns Two Ways

Description

Manapua means mea ono pua’a (“mea ono” for cake or pastry, and “pua’a for pork). This soft and fluffy Hawaiian steamed bun filled with BBQ Pork is influenced by traditional Chinese Char Siu Bao and is very popular on the Islands. Taught by Chef Jonathan, who hails from Hawaii, you can expect to get the tips and tricks of making authentic, the most delicious manapua you've ever had on this side of the Pacific Ocean!

In Hawaii, food peddlers sold a variety of delectable items, especially their famous char siu bao. The peddlers would stack their foodstuffs in large aluminum cans and sling the cans by cords at each end of a pole. Hoisting the poles on their shoulders, they roamed the neighborhoods with their savory-filled buns. They were called the "Manapua Man". Every little kid would come running with coins like the ice cream trucks of modern day to buy their fill. Char siu bao immediately became a favorite among the locals, and was given the name manapua, or mea ono pua’a (“mea ono” for cake or pastry, and “pua’a for pork).

In this hands-on, interactive class, you will learn step by step how to create, knead, shape, stuff, and steam the buns to perfection. You will also learn how to make two different fillings: Classic BBQ Pork and Marinated Tofu. Throughout this action packed yet therapeutic class, Chef Jonathan will be providing thorough instructions on knife skills and techniques you can apply in your own home kitchen afterward.

Once you have finished making you buns, we will enjoy together and say cheers to celebrate the fruits of our labor!

No experience is required! We provide all the equipment and ingredients, which are easy to find at local markets in case you wish to recreate the dish on your own after the class. Our events are casual and meant to be fun and instructive, not hardcore. This class is designed to be just as fun for the cooking enthusiast who wants to be a part of every step as it is for the first-timer who’s happier observing and assisting (or taste testing).

Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in, wearing your mask. When we say "small group size", we mean it! Chef Jonathan will receive only up to 3 guests at a time so you can be confident this will be a small, exclusive group with undivided attention from Chef for each individual. If you are coming with friends or companion, we advise you make one booking on behalf of the entire party. No need to worry about the crowd you often find at a typical restaurant setting!

Such a wonderful time! Highly recommend Jonathan’s class - it was informal and so much fun. The food was delicious. Jonathan was super knowledgeable, and generous with his time and supplies. He also brought some personal foraging expertise into the kitchen, and the group opted to use some really interesting ingredients. I will definitely be back!

Chef Jonathan was full of great information, and was truly helpful for me to learn new skills. He was friendly, patient, and even sent us home with some extra ingredients (that we had really liked) plus leftovers :) Thank you again!
