Handmade Samosas & Chutney

Description

In a complete hands-on class, you’ll explore the rich, diverse spices and flavors of Pakistan by making three types of traditional Samosas from scratch. Class will begin with an introduction, demo and description of the recipes. Our expert Chef Instructor will lead the class in making the dough and shaping it into three different types of samosas. Each samosa will go with it's own unique filling- vegetable, chicken, or lentil. Don't worry, you’ll get to taste them all and even enjoy some leftovers to bring home with you after class!

But what's a samosa without a paired sauce for dipping? You'll also learn the art of making two traditional homemade chutneys to enjoy with your new favorite savory treat!

No experience is required! We provide all the equipment and ingredients, which are easy to find at local markets if you don’t already have them in your home kitchen. This class is designed to be just as fun for the cooking enthusiast who wants to be a part of every step as it is for the first-timer who’s happier observing and assisting (or taste testing). You will work with other students in groups.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in, especially if you’re part of a large group. Guests are welcome to BYOB.

Meet your chef instructor

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Kausar is a food stylist, chef, cookbook author and cooking instructor with over 25 years of experience in culinary arts, education, and advertising.

Kausar’s love for cooking started at family meals and eventually evolved into a career. Growing up in a big Pakistani family it was easy for Kausar to be enamored with food from a young age. “Warm smells would float out of the kitchen and cause a sensory explosion,” she says about her mother’s fresh home-cooked meals where ingredients like turmeric, cumin, and ginger were frequently used, along with whatever else happened to be in season. As she started helping her mother in the kitchen, cooking became a therapeutic activity – bringing people together over a meal gave her immense pleasure as it brought her community closer together.

Kausar is an excellent chef and does a wonderful job of explaining each step in the cooking process. She is well-organized and patient. I gave this class a 4 instead of a 5 because of issues with the venue—too small, cramped, and not enough tools. I suggest limiting guests to 10, having enough tools for all groups, re-arranging traffic flow patterns to spices and herbs, and putting garbage and compost containers in easily accessible places. I enjoyed this class and look forward to more. Thank you!
