Handmade Empanadas

Description

Empanadas are pastries traditionally filled with seafood, meat, cheese, vegetables or fruit. They're thought to have originated in Spain, where the Empanada Festival is part of Galician culture.

Join Chef Jen in her Chicago kitchen as she teaches you how to make the flakiest homemade empanadas from scratch! You will learn to make two fillings, either vegetarian or beef picadillo. Chef Jen will demonstrate how to fill your empanada disks and fold the edges into a braided seal called "repulgue".

No empanada experience is complete without a dipping sauce. So you will also learn Chef Jen's recipe for the perfect Chimichurri sauce!

Please note, you will need to make your dough before class begins so that it has at least one hour to rest. You will then have the option to either fry or bake your empanadas.

Invite your friends and family to join you for class, so you can connect virtually and enjoy a fun experience cooking together. No experience is required! You'll have the opportunity to interact with Chef Jen throughout the class.

You will receive an email with the equipment and ingredients list. However, the main ingredients required include: apple cider vinegar, all purpose flour, butter, sugar, salt, egg, olive oil, yellow onion, ground beef (or protein of choice), gold or yellow potato, bell pepper, tomato paste, honey, garlic powder, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, frozen green peas, dried cranberries, fresh parsley, fresh cilantro, garlic, lime juice, salt, chili flakes, and chili.

Prepare your mis-en-place ahead of the session (see instructions in the ingredients/equipment sheet), grab a glass of your favorite drink, and let’s get cooking!

Tickets are on a per-person basis. Please note our class times are in Eastern Time Zone!

Tell the participants to mute so extraneous conversations and noise will not interfere with the instructions. Participants can unmute when they have a question. Jen, our teacher was patient and informative. We learned some good techniques.

It was a great class! Even as someone who has made empanadas before, I learned quite a few new helpful tips that I will definitely use the next time I make them. Also, the dough was some of the best I've ever had. Thank you for a wonderful class!

Jen was a great instructor. She took the time to make sure everyone was on the same page/experience level. Her instructions were clear and the camera view was great; I could see everything she was doing.
